Get to know Sam Lauersdorf Photography – Wisconsin Wedding Photo + Video
There’s something magical about watching a photographer turn fleeting moments into lifelong memories. For Sam Lauersdorf, that magic began with a simple love of art and a camera in hand; this has since grown into a full-service photography and videography business capturing weddings across Wisconsin and beyond. In our latest Behind the Lens feature, Sam shares how she got started, what inspires her work, and her advice for couples on choosing the right photographer.

How did you know you wanted to be a photographer? How did you go about starting out?
I have always had a passion for photography. When I went to college, I didn’t really know what I wanted to major in, but I explored all avenues and ended up taking a lot of art classes. I was working at Pizza Hut through college, and my coworkers were getting engaged, married or needing senior pictures. I realized there was a demand for professional photography, and I offered to take their photos to get some portrait experience. (I had mostly photographed landscapes and nature before college.) I fell in love and the rest is history!
How long have you been in the business?
I’ve been taking pictures my whole life, but started taking portraits professionally in 2014, and started doing weddings in 2017. In 2021, we added videography and destination elopements.
What are the qualities that make a successful wedding photographer?
A successful professional wedding photographer needs to be able to manage timelines, juggle multiple personalities/family dynamics, and prepare for the unexpected, all while getting a variety of exceptional quality photographs. You have to be a portrait photographer, an event photographer, and a product photographer, all while having great communication skills and ensuring your couple has fun.

Why do you love photographing weddings and engagements?
I truly love capturing love. Getting to spend time with couples on the happiest days of their lives is truly a blessing and not something I take lightly. Your day should be fun, memorable, and stress-free. I always go into each wedding wanting everything to run as smoothly as if it were my own.
How has your photography (style) changed since you started?
Over the years, my photography style has evolved to capture genuine color and emotion. My editing style is vibrant, true to life color. While Photoshop and Lightroom are great (and all photos my couples receive are edited!) I believe the images should reflect what the day actually looked like in terms of color, details, and emotion.
When choosing their wedding photographer, what should a couple look for?
I always recommend that a couple choose someone they truly vibe with. You’ll be spending a lot of time with your photography/videography team on your wedding day, so it’s really important you not only love their work but also their personality.
Is there anything you wish couples would ask?
I am fully insured with multiple backup cameras, dual SD card shooting capacity and extensive contingency plans. I hope couples do their research and choose vendors who are truly committed to their craft and take photography seriously. I’ve seen far too many horror stories where that isn’t the case, and couples are left devastated.
How do you assist in keeping the wedding day running smoothly? Do you work hand in hand with the other vendors?
Yes, absolutely! When no planner is present, I often play unofficial coordinator. Many times, I assist the couple in drawing up their wedding day timeline or chatting through details as early as the consultation. On the day of the wedding, I often work closely with the couple, the DJ, the venue, the caterer, etc. to make sure we are all on the same page and that the day runs smoothly.

What is your typical wedding day routine?
I generally like to arrive 1-2 hours before the ceremony to capture details such as the dress, shoes, invites, rings, and getting-ready photos. We’ll capture the bridesmaids and groomsmen relaxing before the ceremony and a first look if the couple chooses to have one. If time allows, we’ll grab some wedding party photos. Then we’ll capture the ceremony, family photos, and some dedicated bride and groom portraits. That’s the bulk of the day, and now you can relax and have fun! Following dinner and cocktail hour, my team and I will capture first dances, speeches, and some sunset portraits. This portion of the evening is generally a lot more flexible on timing. A personal favorite of mine is an end-of-night, backlit shot. My time at your wedding comes to a close, but the two of you get to party on and see your final images soon!
Do you have an all-time favorite wedding image?
Oh man, putting me on the spot! So many favorites, and they are all unique. If I had to choose right now, a recent favorite would be this shot from Lucy and Nico’s wedding reception right here in Fond du Lac, WI. I love incorporating nature and epic sunsets into my work, as I’ve found Mother Nature really is the best artist!
