Alexander and Madeleine met at De Pere high school. “I definitely had a crush on Alexander as a freshman,” Madeleine says. “Miss Nipp’s science class made sure of that.” Throughout high school, the two dated different people, but stayed friends. They got together for good in the fall of their senior year.
After graduation, Madeleine went off to Minnesota and Alexander to Madison, starting four years of long distance. They talked on the phone every night and made it through by always knowing when they would see each other next. They later moved out to Washington D.C. Alexander popped the question while the two were home in Wisconsin for Memorial Day weekend. It was during a photo op out on the rocks at Cave Point that Alexander got down on one knee. “My back was turned to the shore,” Madeleine remembers. “When I said yes, there was a big cheer from further back on shore—both our families were all there behind us.”
Madeleine’s journey to her wedding dress is a unique one. She had actually found her dream dress on Pinterest years ago and fell in love with it. “When we got engaged, I tried to scour the internet for it, as it wasn’t being made anymore. I found someone who was selling it on preownedweddingdresses.com, in my exact same size and height—it was meant to be.” Madeleine tried on several other dresses just to be sure this was the one, but none could compare!
Alexander and Madeleine planned a summer wedding with a church ceremony at Old St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a reception at Heritage Hill State Park. “We both were confirmed at Old St. Joes, so that was a natural fit. For the reception, we both wanted the atmosphere of an outdoor, tent wedding, with the convenience of being right in Green Bay. Heritage Hill was a natural fit, with a gorgeous view, and it had the ability to really make the space what we wanted, and completely customize it.”
What made the happy couple choose Heritage Hill? “The space in general. Having a tent was a complete blank slate, so we could do the floor plan how we wanted, and with the downstairs lower space, we married the two spaces with a breezeway that had a lounge area. That allowed our relatives who were mobility impaired to stay longer into the night, and keep the space unified, even though it was three separate spaces.”
Because Madeleine and Alexander both have ties to St. Joe’s, the ceremony felt all the more special. “We have known Fr. Neilson for a while, so our ceremony was incredibly personal,” Madeleine says. “Alexander and I love music, so we were incredibly intentional with our songs. Our singer, Anna Kroll, is a friend of mine from high school, and we had done duets in the past. She flew all the way from Scotland to come and be a part of our day! Our pianist, Julie Mackey, had been my accompanist quite a few times in high school as well, and she learned a ton of new music to be able to play for us.”
With trolley bus transportation by Lamers, Alexander and Madeleine were able to make some fun stops to take pictures. “We made a quick stop at our high school for some more comedic pictures, which was super fun! A lot of our wedding party had also gone there. We also stopped for a drink at Copper State, which was delicious, so we have a few photos there.”
To the bride and groom, one of the best things about their reception was the location itself. “Having an indoor space and an outdoor space was so lovely, and being in the park allowed for people to mill around in the fresh air, and take pictures in the beautiful sunset. Ruby Design also put together a gorgeous lounge area, which let folks relax late into the evening, without having to pick between their tables or the dance floor!”
