Mike asked Whitney to marry him in June of 2021 at the top of the Pensacola lighthouse in Pensacola, Florida. Originally, Mike didn’t have a big plan. “He originally was going to propose in Hawaii, but due to COVID we weren’t able to take a family vacation there,” Whitney says. “When we went on our next vacation, he decided to propose whenever he felt the moment was right, which happened to be on top of the lighthouse.”
Whitney says she didn’t see the proposal coming at that moment. “I was shaking so bad when he put the ring on my finger. I was not only caught off guard, I was nervous he was going to drop the ring.” Luckily, he didn’t drop the ring—and it was a perfect fit.
Before popping the question, Mike enlisted the help of his sister Megan when picking out the ring. He chose a few different rings and pulled design elements from each to commission a custom ring just for Whitney.
Whitney and Mike took engagement photos the following October in Green Bay along the river walk. The two aren’t from Green Bay, so it was a fun excuse for them to explore the city a bit. To make their engagement photos unique to them, they brought along Mike’s fireman uniform for some of the pictures. Whitney’s advice for anyone planning an engagement shoot: “If you’re unsure where to do your engagement shoot, ask the photographer! That’s what we did. They usually have a great list of places they’ve taken photos and would be able to help guide you to a place that matches the style you’re looking for.”
Whitney says she started wedding planning right away. “I already knew where I wanted to have my wedding: The Retlaw. My parents had their reception there, so it means a lot to me to be able to get married where they did.” Her advice to anyone who just got engaged: “Soak in the moment, because it all happens so fast!”
