A Little History
Emily and Mauricio seemed meant to find each other across the miles. Emily is from Green Bay, but was born in Calcutta and adopted when she was five months old. Mauricio hails from Leon, Spain. The two crossed paths at the Ashwaubenon bowling alley at an international student outing. Emily always hung out with the international students in college.
After six years of dating and with Mauricio’s student visa about to expire, the two knew marriage was the next step. “We had been looking at rings, so I knew it was coming,” Emily says. Originally, Mauricio had planned to pop the question in Chicago one April weekend in 2017, but a huge snow storm derailed his plans.
The two rescheduled their trip to the Windy City, and when the proposal didn’t come at dinner, Emily thought it wasn’t coming at all that night. But after waiting in line for 45 minutes at the John Hancock building for after-dinner dessert, the waiter presented Emily with her favorite sweet, creme brulée, with the words “Will you marry me?” Her eyes welled up with tears.
The Planning
Mauricio and Emily got married in May of 2018, then planned a big wedding with a vow renewal in May of 2019. The ceremony was held in the church Emily had attended since first grade, and the reception was at the Delta Hotel by Marriott Green Bay. “We saw the hotel from when it was bare with nothing in it to what it is today, which is so beautiful. The rooms were nice, the showers so relaxing, and the beds are also fantastic. Our meetings with our event coordinator, Janis, were wonderful.”
Emily found her Martina Liana bridal gown at White Dress Bridal Boutique. “I loved my experience at White Dress. I felt like they had a great selection of gowns. When I finally said yes to my dress, we got to celebrate with champagne! I felt so special.” As for the overall vibe of the wedding, Emily and Mauricio went for a modern look with some geometric and romantic elements.
The Ceremony
For their church ceremony, Emily’s pastor who she’s known for years and the church’s current pastor officiated. “It meant the world to us.” The bride and groom also included a Spanish wedding tradition: a coin ceremony. “The pastors bless the coins, which represent the 12 apostles and different values. Then the pastor hands them to the groom and then to the bride, to make sure the bride knows she will be taken care of the rest of her life.” Another favorite moment was the ring bearer handing out high-fives to Mauricio at the altar.
Photo Break
Emily and Mauricio stopped at a bunch of landmarks for photos with their wedding party. They hit downtown Green Bay, Titletown Tap Room, the Cannery, and Lambeau, working with Heritage Limousine to get from place to place. “Our driver was so nice and always made sure he helped everyone get into the limo. Even when we sprung an extra stop on him, he was more than happy to do it. The limo was a great way to treat our bridal party so they didn’t have to worry about having to drive all over the city.” Mauricio particularly loved this part of the day and how the photographers and videographer had such great ideas. “We were able to have the modern look we were going for,” he says.
The Reception
It’s safe to say Mauricio and Emily had a blast at their reception. There was an open-air photo booth, an amazing dessert table with seven kinds of mini sweets, and the dance floor was packed all night. For Emily, a very memorable part was dancing with her grandmother to Josh Groban’s “To Where You Are” in memory of her grandfather. “I also loved the speeches by my Matrons of Honor — they both made me cry!”
Emily also loved Mauricio’s mother-son dance. “Even though he doesn’t like dancing that much, he decided to do a first dance with his mom,” Emily says. “They don’t really have that tradition in Spain, and I know he wasn’t thrilled with the idea at first, but he came around. It was so nice seeing his mother with the biggest and proudest smile on her face.”
To keep the 20 kids in attendance entertained, there were coloring books, glow sticks, and stickers to play with. “It was fun to see all the little ones grooving on the dance floor! Kids make it more fun.” The bride and groom also did a photo sprint, where they had two minutes to run around to snap a photo with each table while the theme from “Mission Impossible” played. “It was amazing to see how creative each table got for the picture!”
Guests From Around the Globe
What made Emily and Mauricio’s wedding particularly special was the many guests who came to support them from across the country and the world. Mauricio’s family came from Spain, Emily’s best friend’s family came from Georgia, and there were other guests representing Ireland and Belarus. Some family came from Michigan, Chicago, and Minnesota. One groomsman traveled from Washington D.C., and the Matrons of Honor from Pennsylvania and Minnesota. “It was a magical day to be surrounded by people who love us.”
Tip: Hire a Decorator!
Emily worked with 920 Events to decorate the reception space. “I was so happy I hired a decorator to take care of setting up and taking down. It’s worth every penny!
Vendors:
Make-up Artist: | Nina Jean from Salon Aura | “Nina was great. She did this for me because I was getting my haircut from her venting about how I didn’t have a makeup artist yet, and she came to the rescue.” |
Hair Stylist | Teele Goss at Studio24 | “Teele is so wonderful. We also had 2 trials and each time the look kept getting better and better. The day of the wedding, she arrived and went straight to work on making all of my girls, along with her assistant stylist look like models! She is affordable which is what I wanted since I had girls coming from out of state and didn’t want them to spend a lot on hair.” |
Invitations | Memorable Greetings | “Laura was so wonderful. So friendly, and met with us twice, and was so patient while we figure out what we wanted. She is such a sweet lady, and will make the experience fun.” |
Rehearsal Dinner | Olive Garden
Ceremony Location | Bethany United Methodist Church
Reception Location | Delta Hotel by Marriott Green Bay | “Mauricio and I saw the hotel from when it was bare with nothing in it to what it is today. Which is so beautiful. The rooms were nice, and the shower is so relaxing, the beds are also fantastic.” |
Cake Designer/Dessert | Tamara Cake Guru | “We got SO MANY compliments on our desserts. I would go back to them again and again.” |
Flowers (Bridal Bouquet & Reception Florals) |
Buds n Bloom | “Jared was so wonderful to work with. He took my vision and ran with it and created the most beautiful wedding bouquet for me. I wanted white flowers, specifically white anemone and no roses and he did just that. I knew I wanted to hire him right away because I had seen his work at a couple of weddings I went to and it was fabulous!” |
Flowers (Bridesmaid Bouquets, Boutonniere’s, Wristlets for Mothers, Grandma, and God Mother) |
Silk Flowers n Things | “Chary was wonderful to work with she was easy to get a hold of, she knew the look I was going for and even added elements toward the end. I would highly recommend her if you’re looking for affordable flowers. So many people thought the flowers were real, when they were actually fake!” |
Music/Entertainment | Melodies N Mayhem | “Chris Jones was our DJ and he did such a great job. He kept people dancing all night long and was such a great MC. It was nice that the company had an online profile for us to plan how we wanted our reception to go which was so easy. We could also choose our love it, like it, and hate it list of songs.” |
Transportation | Heritage Limousine | “Our driver was so nice, and always made sure he helped everyone out of the limo, we even sprung an extra stop in there which he was more than happy to do. It was a great way to treat our bridal party so they didn’t have to worry about having to drive all over the city.” |
Photographer | MelodyJoy.Co | “Melody came to our rescue after having emailed so many photographers and almost signing with a couple of them but then having each saying yes but then no, I was wondering who would be available. Melody is so talented and is just the sweetest person, she helped me multiple times during the day with hair, or my dress, she has such a calm demeanor, which made us feel comfortable. Her and her boyfriend Ross from Scotland were such a great team and we feel so blessed they came and shot our special day. I know I wanted more moody, artistic, and editorial looking photos not the regular bright and airy photographs you often see for wedding photos and Melody fit that mold perfectly. I only got a few back so far and I am completely in love. I would recommend her time and time again.” |
Videographer | MaggySmiles Productions | “Maggy was our last minute hire and boy are we happy we did! For forever I wanted a wedding video. While it is so nice to have pictures, a video make you relive the day in another way. She was so sweet and was with us the entire day. It only took her a week to return our video, which I believe is unheard of! Mauricio and I both were in tears watching it, and couldn’t be happier!” |
Wedding Dress Designer | Martina Liana
Bridal Boutique | White Dress Bridal Boutique | “I loved my experience at White Dress Bridal Boutique. I felt like they had such a great selection of gowns. My sales consultant was so nice and wasn’t pushy at all. The dressing rooms were very large which made trying on all types of gowns easy. When I finally said yes to my dress we got to celebrate with champagne! I felt so special there and would highly recommend going for your gown.” |
Rentals-Decor | 920 Events | “What can I say about Brenda other than she was the best money spent. She met with us multiple times; she was always available, so easy to get a hold of, answered multiple questions at all hours of the day and did the best job transforming the space into exactly what we wanted. I loved not having my family or friends worry about helping with decorations or taking time out of their vacation weekend to working for us and setting the reception space up and taking things down. I love that she also worked with some of our own decorations and placed them perfectly throughout. While I bought some décor it was nice I am not stuck with having tons of stuff left over wondering what I am going to do with it all. We were all so tired at the end of the day and were so happy to know she was going to take care of everything for us. Thank you, Brenda!” |
