Matt and Liz started dating in high school, back in the days of instant messaging. The two got engaged during a family trip to Florida. Before a fancy family dinner one night, Matt and Liz were the first ones ready to go. Matt suggested they go ahead of the others to catch the sunset. “I didn’t think anything of it,” Liz says. “Matt insisted we take a walk on the beach to ‘get a better view.’ He took off his dress shoes and socks, I took off my sandals, and we walked hand-in-hand down to the beach. Until Matt stopped, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him.” There were claps and cheers from nearby folks watching the sunset — and the surprise proposal!

The two planned a timeless wedding with a ceremony at St. Joseph Church on the St. Norbert college campus (where Liz went to school) and a reception at the Swan Club in De Pere. Liz’s dress came from Tie the Knot Bridal in Green Bay, and Matt’s formalwear from Dubois Formalwear. On the day of the wedding, snow covered the ground, but the sun was shining beautifully through the church windows. “We didn’t see each other until I walked down the aisle,” Liz says. “But we wrote and exchanged letters before the ceremony and read them separately, which was a special moment to us.”

After the ceremony, the wedding party hopped in a Lamers Bus Lines trolley for a whirlwind photography session. The first stop was to see Matt’s grandma Pat, who unexpectedly had to miss the ceremony to spend the day in the hospital. “We made sure she was a part of our special day! We stopped by to talk with her — many laughs, smiles, and memories were shared.” Then the party headed to the Frozen Tundra for group pictures (“how could we not!”), and finally it was back to St. Norbert for the last round of photos.

When they made it to the Swan Club in De Pere, Matt and Liz were blown away upon seeing the reception hall for the first time. “Our vendors did such an amazing job decorating and making sure our vision came true. We had peonies, loose green and rose arrangements on the tables, along with silver and gold chivalry chairs from Sash & Bow. We had a beautiful sheer backdrop with back lighting that the Swan Club put together behind the table — it lit up the ballroom!”

For dinner, guests enjoyed a traditional chicken dinner and an Old Fashioned fountain, which was a big hit. ” Beth at the Swan Club was amazing. With our guest list of 500 people, she was able to accommodate everything we wanted to make our wedding day perfect. From setting up the ballroom to making sure we didn’t forget to cut the cake, to making sure we never ran out of old fashions in the fountain she was awesome. we appreciated her help and input more than she will know!”
After dinner, Liz and Matt did a photo challenge where they went around the room and snapped a photo with each table of guests — a feat to complete before the Mission Impossible theme song ended. There were 60 tables and 500 people, but they did it! “It was a fun way to get to see all of the guests.” Another fun touch happened during the Grand March, where the bridal party all wore West De Pere High School football and basketball jerseys.

Looking back, Matt and Liz are thankful that they took the time to really let the day sink in: “We were able to step back a few times throughout the day, take a look around, and just live in the moment together — talk to each other and whisper how amazing the day has been so far. From getting ready in the morning with our closest friends, to seeing each other down the aisle in church, to singing our favorite songs on the trolley, to taking pictures in the photo booth, to dancing our first dance as husband and wife, we wanted to make sure we made time for us. It truly does go by so fast!”
