Many reception sites will gladly allow you to bring in an outside cake but with one catch: a cake cutting fee. In an effort to persuade you to use a baker affiliated with their venue an establishment can charge you to cut and distribute your cake. Done on a per-person basis, what seems like a nominal fee can add up very quickly. There are of course ways to avoid this, such as serving individual desserts like cupcakes or small treats.
