If wedding photos capture the love that a couple carries with them for the rest of their lives then their engagement photos show that love’s first spark. Moving beyond the stiff and rigid pictures of your parents’ wedding announcement today’s engagement photos can be personal, spontaneous, flirty, and breathtaking.

Your first task is finding a photographer that you and your fiancé can be yourselves around. The more comfortable you feel the better the pictures will be. Look at an artist’s portfolio ahead of time to see some of their capabilities; knowing what they’ve already done is a great way to get exactly what you want. Choosing a photographer to shoot both your engagement and wedding photos can provide the photographer with a greater understanding as who you are as a couple. The better they know you and what your relationship is about the better they will be able to capture the real you.

There are several important ideas to take into your engagement photo sessions, the first being the location. Odds are your photographer has several locations that he or she has used with great success but don’t be afraid to pick a location that is important to you as a couple. Special landmarks, destinations, and environments are a fantastic way to make your photos both personal and memorable.

Try and pick a general area that has a variety of not only backgrounds but also light and shade, the more variety on the day of the shoot will provide more options when choosing your photos. Now that you’ve picked where the pictures will be taken the next decision is what to wear. Use your wardrobe to convey your unique style and personality but bring several changes to the shoot to see what works best on location. A good rule of thumb is to avoid any kind of logo, graphic pattern, or new trend; remember that these pictures will be seen long after today’s hottest style has come and gone. Most importantly don’t be afraid to have fun!

You will no doubt feel nervous when you start but after loosening up don’t shy away from letting your personalities shine through. Be willing to step outside of your comfort zone as spur of the idea moments and props on hand can yield memorable results.

So much emphasis is placed on wedding photography that engagement photos can get lost in the mix. Don’t lose out on the opportunity to let your engagement photos show the world what your relationship is all about: joy, friendship, and lasting love.
