Mix-and-Match Bridesmaid Dresses – Doing it Right
Bridal party attire has come a long way. Gone are the days of bridesmaids wearing the same dress with matching dyed shoes and identical jewelry. Today, brides are choosing dresses that are as unique as the women themselves. But you don’t want your girls looking like random wedding guests…they have a special role. You need to pull the mix-matched look together to make it perfect.
When deciding how much mix-and-match you’re willing to incorporate in your big day, there are a few things to keep in mind…
-How daring are you? Will it drive you crazy to look back at your wedding pictures and see each of your bridesmaids wearing a different color? Don’t go too far out of your comfort zone.
-Do your bridesmaids have similar body types, or would a different style of dress suit each of them better? If you go for different styles, do you want the same length? Same neckline? Color?
-What color schemes are you comfortable with? Do you want the same color for all? Different shades of the same color? Completely different colors that complement each other?
Once you’ve decided on your own preferences, invite your girls to help make the final decisions. Let them know what’s a “must have” – be it a certain length or color family – and let them choose the rest. Some ideas:
Different colors, same dress:
Make it work: Keep colors in the same theme – beachy brights, spring pastels, muted neutrals, jewel tones. Or stick with the same color family – shades of blues and greens, oranges and yellows, reds and pinks.
Different dresses, same color:
Make it work: Choose a length and have your bridesmaids pick from there. Have them choose from the same designer so that the color is a perfect match…different designers may have dye lots with slight variations.
Different dresses, different colors:
Make it work: Stick with a color theme or family, or a certain length. Keep dresses in the same fabric…satins or beaded styles will have a much different look than chiffon or taffeta.
Regardless of your dress styles and colors, you can always use accessories to give your girls a cohesive look. Have them wear the same style of sandals or shoes, wear the same jewelry or hairstyles, or carry identical bouquets. Match your groomsmen to each bridesmaid to tie the look together even more, or keep them men all the same and let your girls add the flair!
Overall, remember, your wedding should fit your personality (and maybe your groom’s too!) so stick with what makes you happy…soft, bold, modern or vintage…the possibilities are up to you!
